Administrative Message

“There is no substitute for hard work”. Thomas Edison

Winter is here and February has been known to be a very cold month. We are strongly encouraging our students on a daily basis to wear their coats, hats, mitts and boots. It is important that the students dress warmly, as they will be expected to be outside until the entry bells ring (8:05 AM and 12:38 PM). We will post signs for a “Blue Dot Day” when the temperature is below -20 with the wind chill and students may come into the school.

Report cards are now available for viewing through your MyCBE account. If you do not have a MyCBE account please go to the CBE website www.cbe.ab.ca and follow the links to MyCBE/PowerSchool to set up an account or contact the school for assistance. Paper copies of report cards are no longer available.

School Council is an excellent way to find out more about what is happening at our school. School Council is an important part of your child’s educational experience as they provide enrichment activities. Our School council also raises funds so all of our field trips can be provided at a reduce cost to you. Thank you School Council! Our next meeting is on February 7 at 4:30 pm.

Sincerely,

Mr. Adam Topp, Principal
Ms. Joan Murtagh, Assistant Principal

Parking Concerns

For the safety of our children, please be courteous and consider the following when dropping off or picking up children from school.

  • Avoid double parking.
  • Watch for signs indicating ‘No Stopping’ and ‘No Parking’ zones.
  • Leave FIVE (5) metres between your car and any crosswalk markings. This will ensure children are visible when they enter the crosswalk.
  • School bus zones must be kept clear so children can step off the bus and onto a curb instead of exiting into a busy street.
  • Parking too close to stop signs, yield signs or intersections makes it difficult to see children in the area and obstructs the view of other motorists. A distance of 5 metres is required.
  • Blocking entrances to garages or driveways angers neighbours. Stay back at least 1.5 meters.
  • No parking in the Staff Parking Lots.

Late Students

If your child is late getting to school (arriving after attendance is taken at 8:15 am), your child must stop at the office for a late slip. If your child does not stop at the office for a late slip they will be marked absent, and you will receive an auto generated call home indicating your child is absent from school.

After School Care

If your child attends an after school care program, please remember to call in your student’s absence to the after school care provider as well as the school.

Picking up Students

Older brothers and sisters who are picking up children after school must wait outside at their siblings designated doors and should not arrive until 2:35 (12:05 on Fridays).  We are asking you to do this so that we can make sure there are no strangers in our building.  We are also asking students and siblings to head home directly after dismissal, as there is no outside supervision at that time.

If your child does not know that you are picking them up, we will call down to their classroom so that you can pick them up from the office.  If someone else is picking up your child, you must call the office and provide their name. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Allergy Alert and Awareness

We wish to draw your ATTENTION to a life threatening concern for some of our students.

Nuts: A number of our students are allergic to nuts, including peanuts. These children have been trained to avoid foods which may have been contaminated by peanut oils, peanut butter and nuts.

All parents can assist in this critical issue by:

  • Helping your child to understand the life threatening nature of allergies. With younger children you may want to say that this may cause their classmates to become very ill.
  • Avoiding the use of nuts, and peanuts in foods and crafts sent to school.
  • Not sending peanut butter sandwiches or any other peanut snack to school. If you do send your student with lunches/snacks containing peanuts they will eat in the office and miss out on social time with their classmates.
  • Reinforcing our expectation, that trading or sharing of food will not be permitted and is unsafe.
  • Finally, that you as a parent have informed us, the main office, of the severity of your child’s medical concerns.

This is a continuation of this years’ initiative of all of us creating a Nut Aware School. Thank you for all of your support in this endeavour.
